Milwaukee Acrobat Ant Control

Facts & Information

What are Acrobat Ants?

Acrobat ants get their name from the worker ant’s unique ability to raise their abdomen above their head, especially when disturbed. When doing so, these ants look like gymnasts. Acrobat ants are light brown to black in color and 3 to 5 millimeters in length. They emit unpleasant odors when disturbed and have a heart-shaped abdomen. Acrobat ants eat insects and honeydew. They will protect aphids and feed on the honeydew that they produce.

Why Do I Have Them?

Acrobat ants prefer damp environments and are often found outdoors in dead or decaying wood. They are known to invade homes and properties across Wisconsin. Ants seek food and shelter by invading houses through foundation cracks, electrical lines, and tree limbs. Once indoors, ant colonies nest in insulation and damp or rotting woodwork.

Acrobat ants are primarily outdoor pests, but their presence often indicates damaged wood. These ants will nest indoors if moist and rotted wood exists inside your home. Common problem areas include decks, door frames, and soffits. Acrobat ants will also nest inside wood that has already contained tunnels from termites or carpenter ants.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

Acrobat ants are problematic when they invade your home and property. They are not only a nuisance, but their presence can indicate water leaks and rotted wood within the home. Ant colonies need moisture and will nest in damaged woodwork and insulation. When foraging for food, these ants will also contaminate sweets and grains found within kitchen pantries.
