Milwaukee Thief Ant Control

Facts & Information

What are Thief Ants?

Thief ants are known for stealing food from other ants. They will nest very close to, or even sometimes within, other ant colony nests, from which they then steal food and eggs. Thief ants are also commonly referred to as “grease ants” or “sugar ants” because they prefer greasy and sweet foods. They are tiny ants that only grow 1 to 2 millimeters in length. Thief ants are yellow to dark brown in color and are often confused with pharaoh ants.

Why Do I Have Them?

Thief ants will build their nests very close, or even within, other ant colonies. They invade houses through foundation cracks, searching for food and shelter. Ant colonies are relatively small and often difficult to find, making them quite challenging to control. Thief ants will nest outdoors and indoors as long as they are close to other established ant colonies.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

Thief ants are problematic when they invade your home and property. They are not only a nuisance, but they spread harmful bacterial diseases. These ants are known to feed in sewage and on dead rodents. If they gain access to kitchen cabinets and pantries, they can contaminate food.

How Do I Get Rid of Thief Ants?

Getting rid of thief ants can be difficult because of their small colonies and nesting habits. These ants are also not attracted to many ant baits because their primary food source is from other ant colonies. If ants have already invaded your home, the most effective way to get rid of an ant infestation is to contact a pest control professional.
