DIY Prevention Tips for Mosquitoes

What can I Do to Help Eliminate Mosquitoes from my Yard?

In addition to our mosquito spray treatments, the only successful way to eliminate mosquitoes from your yard is by eliminating sources of standing water. Mosquitoes need water to survive, breed, and reproduce.

You can find dozens of “home remedies” or “DIY repellents” from the internet to get rid of mosquitoes in your yard. However, none of these ways have proven successful in getting rid of mosquitoes. They may only protect you from mosquitoes for a few hours compared to our treatment plans that work for several weeks.

Areas to Monitor to Prevent Standing Water & Mosquito Reproduction

  • Birdbaths – change & clean water every few days
  • Buckets & Cans – discard or store upside down so water doesn’t accumulate
  • Canoes & Boats – cover with a tarp or store upside down
  • Cesspools & Septic Tanks – cover with a tarp
  • Drainage Basins – add dirt to low areas where water accumulates after rain (sometimes a French drainage system is needed)
  • Flower Pots – drain standing water
  • Gutters – clean out leaves & debris that could trap water from rainfalls
  • Old Tires – don’t allow them to retain water
  • Toys – store in an enclosed box or container that won’t retain water
  • Small Ponds – stock with fish that will eat developing mosquitoes
  • Storm Drains – check frequently to ensure water flows freely
  • Swimming Pool Tarps – try to have sloped so water runs off & doesn’t accumulate on top
  • Wheelbarrows – store upside down
  • Yard Waste – lawn cuttings & raked leaves should be removed to prevent potential breeding sites

A Few Other Ways that can Help Deter Mosquitoes

  • Bug Zappers can help kill some mosquitoes, but aren’t an effective form of control.
  • Trimming back vegetation & increasing sunlight to your yard will help deter mosquitoes.
