Facts & Information

What are Mosquitoes?

There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes found throughout the world. Mosquitoes are flying insects with one pair of wings, long thin legs, and elongated mouthparts. These nuisance pests typically emerge at dawn and dusk to feed. Male mosquitoes only feed on nectar like other insects. While female mosquitoes also feed on nectar, they use their long proboscis to puncture skin and feed on human and animal blood. The blood meal assists in the female’s diet and the development of her eggs. A female mosquito can lay 100 to 200 eggs at a time.

Why Do I Have Them?

Mosquitoes breed on or near standing water, so properties near ponds or streams are at risk. Mosquitoes rest in thick grass and brush during the day and emerge at dusk to feed. A female mosquito only needs a thin film of water to lay her eggs. Bird feeders, old tires, clogged gutters, pet bowls, and wheelbarrows may harbor these undesirable pests.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

Mosquito bites are annoying and cause itchy red bumps. Not only are mosquitoes are a nuisance, but they can also transmit several dangerous diseases to humans, including Malaria and Zika Virus. Mosquitoes are actually the deadliest species on earth. They are responsible for over one million human deaths each year. On top of that, a few of the mosquito-borne diseases may also affect dogs, including heartworms and West Nile Virus.
