Facts & Information
What are Crickets?
Crickets are a common household pest in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. They have long antennas, slightly flattened bodies, and long hind legs which they use for jumping and communication. Crickets are light brown to dark brown in color and ¾ to 1 inch in length. Only the male cricket can “chirp” and does so by rubbing their hind legs and forewings together. Crickets are omnivores that eat crops, seedlings, and plant-based materials.
Why Do I Have Them?
Crickets prefer warm, damp environments and are often found outdoors in tall grass, mulch, and logs. They are known to invade houses seeking shelter over the cold winter months. Crickets enter buildings through cracks in door frames and foundations. They typically prefer to live outside, but crickets will be drawn indoors if your home provides suitable living conditions, such as moisture, food, warmth, and sunlight.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
Crickets are harmless insects. They can bite, but cricket bites are rare and not fatal. Crickets are primarily a nuisance, especially at night. These pests are nocturnal, and their chirping throughout the night can be quite an annoyance for most homeowners. Crickets may also feed on fabrics and damage clothes.
