Pigeons Around your Home or Business

Pigeons can be quite a problem when they take up residence around your home or business. They will build their nests in soffits and overhangs, and their droppings can deface and accelerate the deterioration of buildings. The droppings can also produce a foul odor, and can kill vegetation. Our pigeon control program consists of live trapping, installation of bird barrier deterrents, and other hazing tactics to ensure that once the flock is removed new pigeons will not emerge.

The typical type of pigeon found in Wisconsin is a variety of the Rock Pigeon, also known as the Rock Dove. The average lifespan of these birds is around 10 to 15 years, and they mate for life. The clutch consists, on average, of two eggs, which are covered for about 20 days by both parents. Pigeons are actually not native to the US. They were originally introduced to America by British settlers, many of whom kept pigeons as pets due to their high level of intelligence.

Pigeons and Humans

Pigeons are actually considered one of the most intelligent birds. They were used by both European and American forces in both World War I and World War II to deliver messages. Some birds have even been awarded medals for their services. One of these medal-awarded birds is even on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.! These pigeons, known as Homing Pigeons, were bred from Rock Pigeons and domesticated specifically for their ability to find their way back to their nests over great distances. Humans saw this, and realized how valuable they could be as pets and message carriers. These formerly-domesticated post-pigeons are what we see running the streets in cities and towns across the US.

DID YOU KNOW? – Pigeons can recognize all 26 letters of the English language.
