When Do Squirrels Have Babies?

Squirrel mating season happens twice a year, once in winter (December – February) and then again in late summer (June – August). With the gestation period lasting 30 to 50 days, baby squirrels are usually born between March and April, and a second litter around August and September.

How Many Babies Do Squirrels Have?

A female squirrel typically gives birth to 3 to 5 babies, called kits. However, we have also seen litter sizes of 8 to 12 babies. Baby squirrels are entirely dependent on their mother. The kits are kept safe by their mother and will stay with her for 10 to 12 weeks before venturing off on their own.

Squirrels in the Attic, Chimney, and House

During the birthing season, new mother squirrels will look for a safe place to nest and raise their babies. A squirrel’s typical tree nest leaves young exposed to predators. Therefore, squirrels will often take up residence in manmade structures, particularly in peoples’ attics, chimneys, walls, and sheds. While they may be cute, squirrels are nosy and can cause serious damage to your insulation, walls, and electrical wires.

Signs of Squirrels

  • Scratching noises in the attic or walls
  • Damaged soffits, fascia, woodwork from squirrels chewing
  • Squirrel nests made from shredded insulation, leaves, twigs

  • Strong foul odors
  • Acorns
