What Do Oriental Cockroaches Look Like?
Oriental cockroaches are shiny black or dark reddish-brown in color. They are relatively large, measuring about an inch long. They have smooth, smooth dark bodies, six spiny legs, and two long antennae. These roaches are attracted to damp environments and are sometimes referred to as “water bugs.” Oriental cockroaches are relatively slow and less wary of threats compared to other types of cockroaches. Both sexes have wings, but neither can fly.

What are the Signs of an Oriental Cockroach Infestation?
Oriental cockroaches are attracted to wet and shady areas like sewers, drains, cellars, and basements. They are primarily an outdoor species, often found in mulch piles. However, these roaches may enter homes in food packages or gain access under exterior doors, garages, and pipes. The most common areas to find oriental cockroaches in homes are toilets, bathtubs, sinks, radiators, sump pumps, and basements.
Seeing a Cockroach
Oriental cockroaches are mostly active at night. They can be found during the day in moist, dark areas. During the warmer months, it is not uncommon to find oriental roaches outside in flower beds, gutters, storm drains, or sewer grates.
Cockroach Droppings
Oriental cockroach droppings look like small cylindrical grains of rice. The droppings are typically dark brown or black with blunt ends and ridges on the sides.
Cockroach Eggs
Oriental cockroaches produce a protective egg sac called an ootheca. The egg sac is encased in a hard protective casing shaped like a bean. Their egg capsules are roughly 1/2 inches long, smooth, and reddish-dark brown. Each ootheca holds about 16 eggs. On average, a female oriental cockroach will produce up to 600 nymphs in her lifetime. The eggs cases are commonly found around bathtubs and underneath sinks.
Cockroach Odor
Oriental cockroaches produce a chemical called an “aggregation pheromone.” The roaches congregate in groups due to the smell of this chemical, which gives off a “musty” smell. As the cockroach population starts to grow, people may begin to notice this odor.
Are Oriental Cockroaches Dangerous?
Oriental cockroaches are filthy pests that breed and feed in unsanitary places like sewers, garbage, and septic tanks. They carry disease-causing organisms on their legs and bodies and transmit bacteria such as E. Coli or Salmonella to food and utensils. These roaches also excrete foul odors and trigger allergic reactions.
