Facts & Information
What are Asian Lady Beetles?
Asian lady beetles are often confused with ladybugs. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look for the distinctive, M-shaped black marking on the Asian lady beetle’s otherwise white head. Asian beetles also vary in color from orange to yellow to red and are slightly larger. They are commonly found in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin.
Although these beetles look similar, they do not behave so. Ladybugs are harmless insects that do not bite, eat harmful garden pests, and seek shelter outdoors. Asian beetles do bite, secrete foul-smelling liquids, congregate around windows in large groups, and seek shelter indoors for the winter.
Why Do I Have Them?
As the weather gets colder, Asian beetles will seek out warm places to hibernate over the winter. From September to November, they will attempt to enter your house through cracks around windows and door frames. Asian beetles congregate in large groups to bask in sunnier, warm areas alongside buildings and near windows. You will also notice a rise in activity in the spring as Asian beetles prepare to move back outside for the summer.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
Asian beetles are primarily a nuisance pest, especially in late autumn when they seek shelter within our homes. They bite and emit a foul-smelling odor when squished, which may leave a stain. Asian beetles are not known to carry disease, but they can cause nauseous effects on dogs and cats. Certain beetle species also damage agricultural crop plants.
