What are Carpenter Ants?
Carpenter ants are one of the most problematic ants in Wisconsin. Using their strong mandibles, these ants create nests inside wood. However, they do not eat wood like termites; they just chew through it. Since they do not eat wood, one of the common signs of a carpenter ant infestation are piles of sawdust found near their nests. Carpenter ants are relatively large ants that grow ½ to one inch in length. They are usually red, brown, or black. Often confused with termites, the carpenter ant is the most common wood-destroying insect in Milwaukee, Waukesha, and southeastern Wisconsin.
Why Do I Have Them?
Carpenter ants prefer to nest in damp, decaying wood. Homes with moisture problems caused by leaks and poor air ventilation are prime targets for carpenter ants. These ants invade houses through foundation cracks, searching for food, moisture, and shelter. Once indoors, these ants are usually found in damp areas, such as basements, kitchens, and crawl spaces. Areas most prone to carpenter ant damage are decks, porches, window sills, and roof eaves.
