Facts & Information
What are Centipedes?
Centipedes are a common household pest in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. These arthropods have elongated, flat, segmented bodies with a pair of legs per segment. While their name may mean 100 legs, centipedes have somewhere between 30 to 300 legs. They are brown to reddish-orange in color and 1 to 6 inches in length. Centipedes are very quick critters that feed on worms, spiders, and silverfish.
Why Do I Have Them?
Centipedes prefer dark, damp environments and are often found outdoors underneath stones, logs, and mulch. They will invade homes through cracks in foundations and doorways, searching for food, moisture, and shelter. Once indoors, these pests are usually found in basements, bathrooms, and closets. Homes with moisture problems often attract these pests.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
House centipedes are harmless and even beneficial since they eat insects. They can bite, but centipede bites are rare and not fatal. Centipedes may become a nuisance and can leave behind stains if squished.
