Facts & Information
What are Fruit Flies?
Fruit flies are a common pest problem for homeowners and restaurants in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. They are yellowish-brown in color with red eyes and a striped pattern on their abdomen. These tiny flies are only 3 to 4 millimeters in length. Fruit flies get their name because of their fondness for fruits, vegetables, fermenting liquids, and sugars.
Why Do I Have Them?
Fruit flies are found in homes, restaurants, grocery stores, and anywhere else food is fermenting. They are attracted to various food sources, including bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, pineapples, peaches, grapes, beer, wine, vinegar, and soda. Poor sanitation and waste management will attract these flies into your house.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
Fruit flies are extremely problematic when they infest your home or business. They are filthy pests that contaminate food and spread bacteria diseases. Fruit flies have an extremely high reproduction rate. A female can lay around 500 eggs, which will hatch in as little as 24 hours. If not controlled immediately, a small problem can soon turn into a full-blown fly infestation.
