What are Millipedes?
Millipedes are a common household pest in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. These arthropods have elongated, worm-like, segmented bodies with two pairs of legs per segment. While their name may mean 1000 legs, millipedes have somewhere between 60 to 400 legs. They are black in color and 1 to 2 inches in length. Millipedes are harmless, slow-moving critters that feed on decaying plants and insects.
Why Do I Have Them?
Millipedes prefer damp environments and are often found outdoors underneath mulch, rotten wood, and stones. Occasionally, millipedes will wander indoors through foundation cracks. Homes with moisture problems often attract these pests. Once indoors, these pests are usually found in basements and garages. Large numbers of millipedes are also commonly found on patios, driveways, and decks.
