Milwaukee Powderpost Beetle Control

Facts & Information

What are Powderpost Beetles?

Powderpost beetles are wood-boring beetles native to Wisconsin. These beetles will lay their eggs in cracks of exposed, unfinished wood. Once hatched, the larvae will tunnel into the wood, filling it with a very fine powder-like dust as they feed on the wood. Powderpost beetles have long, narrow, flat bodies. They are reddish-brown in color and ⅛ to ¼ of an inch in length.

Why Do I Have Them?

Powderpost beetles will attack unfinished hardwoods and can be found in flooring, molding, old wood furniture or antiques, and door frames. These beetles will enter lumber while it is being stored and cured. Homeowners will often bring these insects into their homes inside “infected” pieces of wood. The tiny pinholes where the beetles bore into the wood are easy to overlook.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

Powderpost beetles are extremely problematic when they invade your home. They are not only a nuisance, but they can cause serious damage to your home’s structural integrity. Powderpost beetles dig tunnels in wood, weakening it from the inside. A long-term infestation in a house can cause severe structural damage that may cost thousands of dollars in repairs.
