Facts & Information
What are Spiders?
Spiders are a common pest problem in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Even though these arachnids are beneficial by preying on other pests, they strike fear in many people. Most types of spiders are harmless. The only two venomous spiders found in Wisconsin are the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider. Nevertheless, no one wants to deal with spiders in their home or business.
Spider species come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but each will have eight legs, two body segments, and no wings or antennae. They form very elaborate spiderwebs from the silk they produce. Spiders also have three or four pairs of eyes but very poor vision.
Why Do I Have Them?
Spiders primarily live outside in damp, protected areas. They are known to invade homes and properties across Wisconsin. Spiders do not need much space to get inside. Cracks around windows, doors, and the foundation are all possible entryways for a spider. These pests will move indoors, searching for food, warmth, and moisture. Spiders are also often brought indoors by accident on infested items, such as potted plants, firewood, and furniture. Once inside, these pests are usually found in garages, closets, under furniture and appliances, and corners of walls.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
House spiders are harmless and even beneficial since they eat insects. They can bite, but house spider bites are rare and not fatal. While most spiders pose little risk to people, some species are venomous that may cause medical issues. In Wisconsin, the venomous spiders are the brown recluse and black widow. Both are non-aggressive spiders that are very rarely found in Wisconsin. Spiders strike fear in many people, and their abandoned spiderwebs are a nuisance for most homeowners.
