Facts & Information
What are Stink Bugs?
The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive species that is becoming an increasingly common pest in Wisconsin. Stink bugs are ¾ of an inch in length and have a brown triangular-shaped body. The stink bug gets its name from the odorous smell they emit when threatened or crushed. Stink bugs feed on fruits like peaches and apples and are a major agricultural pest. The brown marmorated stink bug has caused over $37 million in losses to hundreds of mid-Atlantic apple growers.
Why Do I Have Them?
As the weather gets colder, stink bugs will seek out warm places to hibernate over the winter. From September to November, they will attempt to enter your house through cracks around baseboards, windows, doors, and vents. Having fruit-bearing trees, such as apples, peaches, blackberries, may also attract stink bugs to your property.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
Stink bugs pose no threat to humans or pets. They are primarily a nuisance pest, especially in late autumn when they seek shelter within our homes. Stink bugs do not cause structural damage, but they emit a foul-smelling odor when squished, which may leave a stain. They will often die in light fixtures and damage fruit trees, plants, and gardens.
