What are Paper Wasps?
Paper wasps are semi-social insects that live in small colonies containing about 10 to 80 members. Commonly mistaken for the yellowjacket, paper wasps have slender bodies with a thin waist and orange-tipped antennae. They are primarily black and yellow and ⅝ to ¾ of an inch in length. They build upside-down umbrella-shaped nests. Even though paper wasps are beneficial by preying on other pests, they are also very aggressive and will attack anyone that comes too close to their nest.
Why Do I Have Them?
Paper wasps are commonly found in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. They will nest on your property because it offers them a safe place to live and feed. Nests are usually found in trees and bushes. However, they also tend to build nests on sheds, under eaves, and porches. Yards with plenty of shade and sheltered areas are more at risk for an infestation. Paper wasps may venture indoors through open windows and doors, looking for shelter as the weather gets colder.
Why Should I Be Concerned?
Paper wasps are protective of their nests and will attack and sting people that invade their space. Wasps have smooth stingers, which allows them to sting multiple times. Wasp stings are very painful and may result in severe reactions to people who have stinging insect allergies. Accidentally stumbling across a wasp nest can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.
