Facts & Information

What are Ticks?

Ticks are small parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of warm-blooded hosts. They are reddish-brown in color and have a flat, oval-shaped body. Ticks are also wingless and the size of a sunflower seed (3 to 6 millimeters in length). These bloodsucking pests feed on both humans and animals. Ticks pose serious health concerns as they are known to transmit diseases, such as Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, and Powassan. The signature sign of a Lyme tick bite results in a solid red oval or bull’s eye rash.

Why Do I Have Them?

Ticks prefer moist, humid environments and are often found in wooded or grassy areas. They latch on to hosts as they walk through grass or brush. Once they are on a host, they attach themselves to the body. If they are not removed, ticks feed on the host’s blood for hours or even days. These pests often hitchhike indoors on pets, people, firewood, or household pests like rodents.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

Ticks bites are harmless the majority of the time. However, ticks are a common carrier of Lyme Disease, which causes a bullseye rash to appear as well as flu-like symptoms. They can also transmit several other dangerous diseases to humans and pests. According to a recent CDC statement, the number of illnesses caused by tick bites tripled between 2004 and 2016.
