WHAT ARE SKUNKS?

You don’t want to run into this animal rear-end first! Skunks are black and white mammals known for the intense and smelly spray they can release as a defensive mechanism. Active during the night, skunks are excellent diggers that will tear up lawns looking for grubs or plant bulbs. They have keen senses of smell and hearing but have very poor vision. Skunks are about 2 feet long and typically weigh around 5-13 pounds. Skunks are also body-heavy, making them very slow-moving animals.

Skunks are omnivores and will eat berries, insects, earthworms, grubs, small rodents, eggs, and food scraps in people’s trash.

Skunks can be found throughout Wisconsin in both rural and urban areas. They will live in brushy areas near forests, open pastures, burrows, and underneath decks, porches, garages, and sheds.

The breeding season for skunks occurs from February to March. Baby skunks are born in spring to mid-summer with a litter size of about 2-10 babies. The largest litter of skunks we’ve caught was 13 babies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SKUNKS?

Skunks cause countless problems for homeowners throughout Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Area. They will often burrow underneath decks and sheds for shelter, causing potential structural damage. Getting sprayed by a skunk is never fun, and it is very tough to get the smell out of your clothes and skin. They will tear up flower beds and lawns in search of food. Skunks are also common carriers of rabies and other diseases.
