Ever since I was a little kid, one of my favorite things to do while traveling has been to go to zoos. I’ve been to zoos in more than ten states, and even a few overseas! There’s just something about being able to get a close-up look at animals that you might never see otherwise that I’ve always found really special. Plus, it’s a great way to learn more about animals and their behavior, and what we as humans can do to help these amazing animals stick around for future generations to enjoy as well. Some of my personal favorite animals that I’ve seen in zoos are red pandas, snow leopards, and wolves. These are all animals that you wouldn’t normally encounter in the wild or on a regular basis, which I think is what most people expect when they think of animals in zoos, aside from maybe in a kids’ petting zoo area.
So imagine my surprise as a born-and-raised Midwesterner upon finding a raccoon exhibit when visiting the San Diego Zoo! Why on Earth would anyone put a raccoon in a zoo! Just leave a bag of marshmallows out while camping and you’ll probably see a whole family of them, no zoo admission fee required! But it really puts things into perspective, when you take a moment to think about it. While raccoons may be a common nuisance here in Wisconsin and in many other states across the Midwest, people living in densely populated cities in California might never have an encounter with a wild raccoon.
Now, as nice as it probably sounds to never see a raccoon galloping across your yard, hiding away in your attic, or having its litter in your chimney I’m still not sure it’s worth the real estate pricing, though! Plus, our technicians are always here to help! There’s a reason why our logo is a raccoon, after all – they’re our specialty! Whether they are running around your yard, hiding in your attic, or trying to make their den in your chimney, we are only a phone call away!
